Why the Off-Season is Critical to Your Child’s Development
The off-season is the perfect time to make significant progress in basketball. Whether your child is aiming to improve their shooting, ball-handling, or overall game IQ, the off-season offers the best opportunity to develop and build confidence for the next season.

What Parents Need to Know about Off-Season Training
from Coach Jefferson Mason
Understanding the importance of off-season training is key.
The biggest mistake parents make each off-season is waiting too long to start their athlete’s skill and knowledge development. Too often, training doesn’t begin until just a few weeks — or even days — before tryouts. At that point, it’s usually too late, and young athletes can find themselves behind the curve.
The good news? There’s a simple solution.
Start by identifying a few key areas your athlete needs to improve — like ball-handling, shooting, strength, or game IQ. If you’re unsure where to start, connect with their most recent coach or schedule a quick evaluation with a trainer. Once you’ve pinpointed the priorities, create a plan to address them using available training tools and resources, such as Dr. Dish shooting machines.
The goal is to maximize skill development within your family’s schedule. Life, other activities, and downtime are all important — so find a rhythm that works for you and your athlete.
Most importantly, focus first on the core areas that will have the biggest impact. As the offseason progresses, add more drills and expand your training when time allows. With this approach, your athlete will be on track to make meaningful growth this spring and summer.
